I received a degree in industrial engineering in June 2002 from the
University Karlsruhe (TH) in Germany. My diploma thesis was written at the marketing institute
ETU under supervision of
Prof. Dr. Wolgang Gaul, the head of the institute. My second supervisor was
Prof. Dr. Dr. Lars Schmidt-Thieme who is now head of the
Computer-based New Media group at the University of Freiburg.

Abstract
This diploma thesis is about Recommender Systems. The goal is to describe state of the art in Recommender Systems and analyse the algorithmic technologies used. First an introduction to Recommender Systems is given acompanied by real world examples. Second different approaches of model-based and memory-based algorithms are discussed. After the discussion several collaborative filtering tests described in different papers are performed. In order to perform these tests an algorithmic framework was created which is part of the diploma thesis. Finally the functionalies and benefits of Recommender Systems are discussed from an economic point of view and a short outlook of future trends is given.
