At the moment I listen to a lot of play.fm.

June 2007
Last.fm introduced widgets. Let's give it a try:

They did it, finally pandora was shut down for non US listeners due to licencing constraints. Wow, is this not crazy? Here ist the official statement from Pandora's front page:

"We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S.".

Well it can be done anyways, how to do it is explained here:

Pandora.com is a free music service that streams music to your computer. It is only available to U.S. citizens and you have to provide a valid zip code. Funnily, the most used zip code is Beverly Hills 90210. I wonder these users are from Beverly Hills or just using this valid U.S. zip code? Hovever, they have a huge music database and all music tracks are decomposed in a very large Music Genome. This means each song is described based on attributes by professional music people employed by pandora.

What you then do on the pandora page is to create readio stations consisting of songs that you likel. Based upon the music information of the genome a station is compiled for you. You can add songs to the station and rate the songs played on the station in order to fit it to your taste. It works pretty good, above you see a screenshot of my pandora radio stations.

Last.fm is a cool tool for exploring new music. It is free service that streams music to your computer. You have to install the last.fm player and a couple of plugins for winamp, windows media player and other supported players you might have installed. When you listen to music with your winamp, the artists and tracks are reported to last.fm. Based upon this information similar artists and tracks are computed. This information is then used to stream similar artists radion stations to your last.fm player.

I think this is a cool web2.0 idea from the field of social software. Here are some of the statistics collected from my winamp:
My Top Weekly Artists                   My Top Overall Artists

The Cat Empire is my new favourite band from Melbourne, Australia. First time I heard them on the radio and immediatly thought their music was awesome. I have a couple of their CDs and saw them live at the NUKE festival in the beginning of July. They played in the afternoon, the sun was shining, and their music was just perfect for a hot satureday afternoon with drinks and dancing. When I tell people about The Cat Empire they often ask what their music is like. This is difficult to explain. It is definitely music that is fun to listen to, and which makes you happy. Here is an excerp about their music, which I found on their website:

"Where hip-hop meets reggae, where jazz is played with dirty hands, where a Cuban line meets an Aussie rule, where nothing seems in place, but sounds like many places played in on earthy chord..."

In this section you find some music stuff. On this page i put some music reviews (whenever I think it is worth it to mention a new CD). Some of my own compile samplers you find in the

samplers section.

Another cool tool I found recently is  Gnoosic.com, a cool tool for music recommendations. Based upon preferences, in this case three bands you like, similar bands are recommended. The output is presented as a map. Here is an example for Björk from beautiful Iceland: http://www.music-map.de/bj-f6rk.html.

This is also an awesome project http://www.pandora.com. It is created by "The Music Genome Project", a project trying to explore music, and provide similar artists and songs. It works based on user ratings.

Spring 2006

Here are some recent CD's I listened to and thought they were worth mentioning.....

Norways electro pop princess Annie from Bergen recently compiled an album in the famous DJ-Kicks Series for !K7 records. I don't like all DJ-Kicks compilations but Annie's is defenitely a good one. The sampler is a mixture of cool and funny popsounds with a nice blend of electronics. It is defenitly party music.

This is a nice one! Released in 2003 by Alex Rizzo and Elliot Ireland. It is a nice blend of funky breaks with an R&B or Groove flavour. I enjoy very much listening to it. Somehow their homepage is down, it should be http://www.skeewiff.com.

Cool album by Madrid-based Oli Stewart. It is what it says "Moods and Grooves". The release was 2004. More about the artist at http://www.casbahrecords.com.
